DNR: Deer Killing Disease Now in 24 Counties

Posted:

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources released new numbers Monday stating that epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD, has now spread to 24 counties.

Over 4,200 deer have been impacted by the disease in Michigan. The DNR expect for that number to rise when farmers plow their fields and harvest crops.

The disease is caused by a virus that is transmitted by a type of biting fly. A constant characteristic of EHD is its sudden onset. Deer can suffer extensive internal bleeding, lose their appetite and fear of humans, grow progressively weaker, salivate excessively and finally become unconscious. Due to a high fever, infected deer often are found sick or dead along or in bodies of water.

The first hard frost is expected to kill off the biting flies that cause EHD.

You can see a complete list of the counties on the Michigan website.
