Uncle Fred's Spin on Prep Week #5

Hard to believe we are now more than halfway through the High School Football season.  Time flies when you're having fun eh?   Having a lot of fun again last Friday night—the Lansing Everett Vikings, who keep rolling.  Coach Marcelle Carruthers' Vikes made it 5 straight wins this season with a convincing 54 to 7 thumping of Lansing Eastern.   Carruthers faced the school where he once starred as a quarterback in the early 80's and his own junior QB Lucas Barner continues to shine not so much with numbers but with the way he directs this offense and his remarkable poise. The other stars for the Vikings were James Mills, who scored 3 TD's and Alec Cambric, who rushed for 187 yards and scored a TD as well.   It's been 5 years since the Vikings have started a season 5-and-0 and this hot start comes 2 years after they went 0-and-9 and lost 16 consecutive football games.

Huge game this Friday as unbeaten Everett faces once-beaten East Lansing.  This could be the game of the year in Mid-Michigan.    Some of the luster came off this matchup when the Trojans lost their first game of the season last Friday to Holt, 21 to 14.   But not shame in losing to Holt, the Rams could still be a force in this CAAC Blue Race before it's over.  What a remarkable performance by the Rams' Ty Glover who rushed 33 times for 190 hard-earned yards and 2 TD's.  The big play of this game was turned in by Holt's Dominic Trevino, who returned an interception back for a touchdown to change the complexion of the game.

The shocker of the night was at Mason, where the Charlotte Orioles scored a huge win over the previously unbeaten Mason Bulldogs, 35 to 3.   This on the heels of a blowout loss the Jackson Lumen Christi the previous week, the Orioles bounced back with their 3rd win in 5 games this season behind Anthony Charameda's 143 yard rushing, 2-TD effort.  The Birds are a factor in the CAAC Gold after this win, now 3-and-1 in the league.

Congrats to one of the top individual performers of the season, Haslett's runningback Connor Brewer, who scored 4 touchdowns and had a 5th TD called back due to a penalty, as Haslett rolled over a very good Ionia team 52 to 28.  Brewer ran for an even 300 yards in the rain and slop to lead the Vikings to their 2nd win of the season.

Ithaca is so good, the Yellow Jackets are getting boring!  Just kidding---noting boring about this offensive circus, the Jackets at it again Friday night with a 70 to 0 victory over Breckenridge.  That's 5-and-0 for Ithaca and the winning streak is extended to an incredible 33 in a row, having not lost since December, 2009 in the State Semi-finals.

More thrills this week in Week 6.  Hope your are enjoying our new 5th Quarter Page with expanded hi-lites and we'll see you on the 5th Quarter at 11:15 Friday night!
