Authorities in Jackson County say a shooting investigation in the Vandercook Lake area, might be related to a robbery in Calhoun County.
An officer from the Calhoun County Sheriff's office says around 9:30 Thursday morning, two men robbed a home on the 1600 block of J Drive South. When the homeowner found the men in his barn, one of the intruders hit the man with a baseball bat and took control of him and his wife. The man eventually managed to get free, grabbed a gun and shot at the suspects, hitting one.
Captain Matt Saxton says the two suspects, from the Albion area, took off at that point and a search began.
Then around 10:30 a.m., a call was made in Jackson County for a shooting. The man who called 911 said another man got hit by a bullet as he was walking down the street. Investigators arrived at the scene on the 5400 block of Sharon Drive in Summit Township, found a man with a gun shot wound in his side, then took the man to the hospital. Investigators looked for evidence but found no sign a shooting took place there, which is why authorities believe the two cases are likely related.
"We did take custody of a person we believe to be connected to the case. He's a person of interest at this point in time, we can't say whether he's necessarily a suspect, but he's certainly someone we need to do some speaking with and further investigation," said Jackson County Sheriff Steven Rand.
He's now being held in Calhoun County.
The Calhoun County Sherriff's Office says the man who suffered a gunshot wound had surgery, but officials in Jackson say his injuries are not life threatening. Sheriff Rand tells 6 News the man will also be turned over to Calhoun County when he's released.
The incident is still under investigation by Calhoun and Jackson County officials.
