Michigan State Getting $45M for Youth Effort

Posted:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State University is getting $45 million to help provide disadvantaged youth - especially those from Africa - with access to high-quality education.

The university announced this week the money would support 185 scholars throughout the nine-year program, which includes 100 four-year undergraduates and 85 master's degree students. It is part of a $500 million effort called The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program.

"We want out students to be global leaders, and the students who are mastercard scholars fit into that ideal," said Lou Anna Simon, MSU President.

Michigan State University is among six U.S. institutions involved. The first undergraduate students taking part in the program are enrolled now.

The program is geared toward African students who've displayed leadership and a commitment to use the skills they've aquired at MSU to contribute to the development of their home nations in Africa.
