Fashion Industry Gets a Boost in East Lansing

The top reality TV show Project Runway is making an impact in East Lansing. The show is about designing and creating fashion.

Michigan State's College of Arts and Letter is celebrating 50 years, while business developers in Lansing are working to bring a new fashion incubator downtown.

Assistant Professor of fashion design Theresea Winge says that they're working to ready students to start their own company or have their own brand. She says they've already had students go on to work for brands like Nike, Toyota and Vera Wang.

Soon joining MSU's program will be a new fashion hub where the historic Knapp's building sits on Washington Avenue in downtown Lansing. The Lansing Economic Area Partnership is leasing two stories and around 8,000sq. feet for the runway. Right now, the space is empty and needs a lot of work, but officials predict it should be a thriving hub in about a year.

LEAP says that allowing them to share space and equipment will also allow them to share ideas while helping cut costs. It will also help boost the Lansing economy by encouraging job creation.

"We have probably close to 20 different entrepreneurs who are looking to start a business in some way," said Sarah Graham, with LEAP.
