Massive Fire Destroys Businesses, Apartments in Shiawassee Co.

BYRON, Mich. (WLNS) – Several businesses and apartments in Shiawassee County were destroyed in a massive fire that started around 2:30 a.m. on Monday.

Officials say the blaze sparked in a vacant apartment above Janelle's Family Restaurant in downtown Byron. The owner of that restaurant says his business is a complete loss.

"We named the restaurant after my daughter who was deceased about six years ago," says Robert Durk, owner of Janelle's Family Restaurant. "And  [it's not] quite as bad, but it's another tragedy in my life that really upsets me. It's almost like losing my daughter again."

Fire officials say the flames spread to two other businesses – a hair salon and a hardware store - as well as to other apartments on the second level.

"This was the heartbeat, the downtown that we have," says Rick Musall, Burns Township Fire Chief. "Now it's gonna take a lot of money and time to get this up and running again. You're talking three and possibly four active businesses that need to rebuild. And in today's economy, I hope they come back."

No one was injured in the blaze; officials are still investigating a cause.
