At a time when there are many people in need, the Salvation Army is counting their blessings thanks to a continued partnership with Jackson-based corporation Consumers Energy.
The program is called "Peoplecare" and has been continuing to grow since the 1980's. This year, Consumers Energy is providing $1.5 million in energy bill credits, but the company is hoping to raise even more funds for the program this year with your help.
It's just a matter of time before warm days turn into cold winter months, which is why the Salvation Army and Consumers Energy are teaming up to help people keep their heat on.
"Our funding has been so drastically cut in other areas. And other funding that we typically depended on. And the economy, as everyone knows, is really struggling in every area. So it's very important to get this funding for the Peoplecare, so that we can help clients that can't find help at any other agencies," said Angie Sterner with the Jackson Salvation Army.
The program does more than provide utility assistance. According to Dan Bishop with Consumers, it also provides for emergencies, involving accidents or health issues.
The campaign is just getting started. Over the next month, a special section on Consumers bills will be offered and by checking a box, visiting their website or mailing a payment to PeopleCare, c/o The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 27518, Lansing, MI 48909 a small monitary donation could make a big difference for about 10,000 Michigan families.
"Our customers and employees donated $790,000 last year. We hope to reach that level if not more. We know Michigan's economy is improving somewhat and we hope people who are doing a little bit better, will remember their neighbors in need," said Bishop.
If you are interested in receiving assistance from this program, the best way to get started is to call and make an appointment with your local salvation army.
