Rugged/commercial card combines Altera's high-performance Stratix V FPGAs with an ARM® Cortex?-A8 control processor, two BittWare Anemoneā„¢ floating point co-processors, and two VITA-57 FMC sites.

Concord, NH (PRWEB) October 06, 2012

BittWare, http://www.bittware.com/, the leader in Altera-based FPGA COTS boards, announced today the availability of the industry's first 6U VPX board powered by Altera's 28-nm Stratix® V FPGAs. The S5-6U-VPX (S56X) is a rugged VITA 65 6U VPX card providing a configurable 48-port multi-gigabit transceiver interface supporting a variety of protocols, including Serial RapidIO, PCI Express, and 10GigE, and two VITA 57 FMC sites for enhancing the board's I/O and processing capabilities. When combined with the optional BittWare Anemone floating-point co-processors, the board packs a powerful punch for those applications requiring flexible FPGA processing in a rugged form factor.

"The Stratix V is an extremely powerful FPGA, providing a tremendous amount of logic, memory, and multipliers, coupled with a large number of multi-gigabit transceivers," stated Ron Huizen, VP of Technology at BittWare. "Providing two of these FPGAs on a proven, fully-validated, VITA 65 OpenVPX COTS platform, with each Stratix V having access to a full FMC site for adaptable I/O and an Anemone co-processor for floating point, as well as the ARM for overall board control, makes for an extremely powerful board ready for deployment."

"BittWare and Altera have a long history of working closely together to provide high-performance, reconfigurable FPGA-based COTS boards to the industry," said David Gamba, director of Altera's military and computing business unit. "By leveraging the Stratix V GS FPGA's floating point DSP blocks, which deliver up to one TeraFLOP of computing performance, combined with the FPGA's low-power, multi-gigabit transceivers and a high-density, high-performance architecture, BittWare's S56X board delivers a rugged and completely flexible signal processing solution capable of driving innovative new capabilities previously unseen in military applications."

S5-6U-VPX Overview:

  • Two high density Stratix V GX/GS FPGAs
  • Two VITA 57 FMC sites for processing and I/O expansion
  • 800 MHz ARM® Cortex?-A8 control processor
  • Two Anemone floating point co-processors (optional)
  • 48 multi-gigabit transceivers
  • Up to 8 GBytes on-board DDR3 memory
  • Misc. I/O includes: GigE, SerDes, LVDS, RS-232

About BittWare, Inc.
For over two decades, BittWare has designed and deployed high-end signal processing board-level solutions that significantly reduce technology risk and time-to revenue for our OEM customers. Our solutions leverage the latest FPGA technology from Altera and our Anemone FPGA co-processing chip which reduces FPGA power and complexity by hosting C language aspects of a signal processing application. BittWare's solutions are based upon industry standard COTS form factors including PCIe, AMC, VPX / OpenVPX, VME / VXS, CompactPCI, PCI, XMC, FMC (VITA 57), and PMC. When power and space-constrained challenges make it difficult to use industry-standard boards, BittWare can provide modified solutions, licensed designs, and/or chip-level products for applications in the military/aerospace, high end instrumentation and telecommunications infrastructure markets.
