Body Found In Burned Up Barn

Posted:

Authorities say an unknown person's badly burned body has been found after a fire inside a mid-Michigan barn owned by the parents of state Senator Judy Emmons.

The victim isn't a relative of the Republican lawmaker from Sheridan.

Officials received the report of the fire early Tuesday. The farm is in Montcalm County's Bushnell Township, about 45 miles northwest of Lansing. The barn was used mostly to store hay. Emmons says the family has owned the property for more than 50 years.

The sheriff's department is investigating the death, and authorities say they're sending the victim's body to Michigan State University for identification. They say the age and sex of the victim weren't immediately clear.

Officials say the man found at the scene was most likely a homeless person looking to stay warm last night. They say he was familiar to people in the area and had been living in buildings near this barn for years.

A state fire marshal is assisting the investigation, and the cause hasn't been announced.

Emmons says her parents live about two miles from the barn.

"It's just an unfortunate thing. I'd hate to see that this is the way somebody loses their life," said Emmons.
