University of Phoenix plans to close eight of its 10 Michigan locations as part of a broader effort to phase out some of its campuses and learning centers.
University of Phoenix's Alex Clark says the locations being phased out won't be enrolling new students. They are expected to stay open until current students get degrees.
However, some say that Lansing Community College could potentially benefit from the closings.
"I think students will see us as a viable option, especially if they were looking at Phoenix for their first two years. I would hope that they look at LCC for those same first two years, at a much lower cost," said Evan Montague.
University of Phoenix plans to keep locations in Detroit and Southfield open.
The closings nationwide include 25 main campuses and 90 smaller satellite learning centers. Following the closures, University of Phoenix will be left with 112 locations in 36 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
They say they will not be changing tuition costs for online classes, which are still going strong. The university will save around $300 million from the closings.
University of phoenix representatives were not available for comment.
