TMSG: Hispanic Heritage Month

Posted:

It's Hispanic Heritage month in Michigan and one local radio host is celebrating by sharing stories of many local leaders with hispanic roots.

The voice of Tony El Chayo Cervantes has been broadcasting out of WKAR in East Lansing for more than 40 years now.

"Back in '68, WKAR started the pilot program and I didn't want to do it, but I decided to go and now I'm still here," said Cervantes.

He's making a difference by connecting with both hispanic and english audiences every weekend morning on 870AM.

"We talk spanglish. You know, I'll be doing the weather and I'll say something in spanish, so you'll lose me. But that's the way we talk in the hispanic community," he says. "I like to focus on PSA's that promote stay in school, stay outta the gangs, stay outta the drugs."

Hs message also focuses on cancer awareness, a personal journey he's carried for his entire radio career.

"My wife and I are into that because we're both cancer survivors. She's my tower of strength, my great supporter," Cervantes says.

She's not the only one. From his WKAR family to his radio listeners, El Chayo has an entire community tuned in to his positivite and uplifting nature, both personally and professionally.

"I go in with the idea of entertaining and informing, which is what WKAR does."
