MSU Professor of Criminal Justice Chris Melde says there is very little research being done on cases like this because they're so rare and there's no pattern being followed.
"There's not enough of these events to where we get a good understanding of the motives behind it or the reasons behind it. Typically those motives or reasons only come out after a suspect is captured," said Melde.
He says this situation is not similar to the Washington DC snipers case in 2002 primarily because of the weapon used.
"If the reports of the handgun are true, then it doesn't seem to be of the same sophistication or premeditation as the DC Sniper," Melde added.
He says the public is the greatest resource in helping to solve cases like this.
"These types of cases are typically solved with community help. And so if people have information even if it doesn't fit the earlier reports that have been provided, please contact the police."
Melde says the most difficult thing about investigating this case is the apparent lack of motive.
