Michigan Leads Meningitis Cases from Steroids in U.S.

Posted:

Michigan now leads with the number of confirmed meningitis cases across the United States as a result of contaminated steroids.

There are 328 cases have been reported nationally, 80 of them in Michigan. 24 people have died in the U.S., including a Livingston woman.

67-year-old Lilian Cary died on September 30, about one month after she received a contaminated steroid shot at a Brighton Clinic. Her husband says now he's being treated at a hospital for similar meningitis symptoms. 65-year-old George Cary also received the injection, but initial tests showed no evidence of the infection.

In a statement, Cary's daughter said her family is focused on his recovery, that "he feels as good as can be expected given the circumstances. We are cautiously optimistic for a good outcome."

"I believe Michigan was one of the top three states as far as the volume of vials received, that said, I don't have figures for that," said Angela Minicuci, spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Community Health. "Additionally, our staff as well as staff at the four facilities have done a commendable job in patient notification. Roughly 97 percent of patients who were exposed were contacted via phone and the rest who could not be reached by phone were sent letters."
