Today was the grand opening of the Capital Region Airport's Port Lansing Global Logistics Center. It's a $6 million project that will attempt to change the game in international trade.
Officials say they're already in talks with 12 companies. It will also serve as storage for shipments.
"They just want a hassle free environment that is reasonably priced, can meet all of their service needs in importing and exporting and they can have a personal relationship with the community instead of one that you don't have with the large gateways," Capital Region Airport Authority President and CEO Robert Selig.
This warehouse is the first of five that will serve as a logistics hub for international commerce where they'll process international freight shipments and distribute them within 500 miles of Lansing.
"What it really brings to the area is an opportunity to grow business."
From custom brokers to air cargo airlines, officials say it will bring in not only new business that will pour into the local economy, but make things easier for local businesses already involved in international trade.
"To avoid the congestion and high cost of historic gateways like Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis and focus on a new generation of gateway that's more efficient and cost effective."
Officials say within the next six months, they plan on seeing a lot of activity.
