Michigan Soldiers Prepare for Deployment to Kuwait

Posted:

There were a lot of hugs, tears and smiles, but also an overwhelming feeling of pride as some soldiers from the Michigan National Guard prepared to head overseas Friday. They'll be headed to Kuwait for ten months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

One little girl, filled with pride, had to watch her dad leave again, but as Sgt. 1st Class Don Wilhelm will say, "she's trying to be brave today."

It will be Wilhelm's third deployment and he says, "it gets harder actually as time goes on because she keeps growing... I just tell her it's time for dad to go again."

Something that is often easier said than done, as his 7-year-old daughter Lauren looks in his eyes and says "I'm going to miss you, dad," to which he says, "I'm going to miss you, too, honey.

During their deployment, they'll be using C-12 aircraft to provide VIP troop and cargo transportation. These soldiers are capabale of going anywhere with little preparation, volunteering to carry out missions on a daily basis.

As hard as the temporary good bye is, Lauren says she's, "really, really proud of her dad." A pride Wilhelm carries with him, everywhere he goes as he continues to serve.

"She told me before when we were talking about me deploying, she said 'I don't want you to get out because I'm proud of you being a soldier,'" he says.

"When it comes down to the day to go, it's always a sad day for everybody, but that's just part of the job, I guess. If you want to do this business, then this is what it comes down to," says Wilhelm.

Before heading to Kuwait the soldiers will spend about a week at Fort Benning.

The Guard is a part of Operational Support Airlift Detachment 15 based in Grand Ledge.
