Suspect in Serial Shootings Charged in Livingston County

Posted: Updated:

The man police are calling a suspect in the serial shootings is formally charged.

43-year-old Raulie Casteel was arraigned Wednesday on six counts of dangerous weapons for an October 18th shooting in Livingston County.

For nearly a month, 100 investigators have given it their all.

David Morse, Livingston County Prosecutor: "This was a very well coordinated effort between law enforcement agencies, a lot of cooperation, a lot of time and effort went into this."

And that effort has put Raulie Casteel behind bars.

David McCain, Special Agent In Charge: ATF Detroit: "We feel confident that we have the individual that's responsible for the charges that we brought against him."

But so far he's only charged in one of the 24 shootings.

Morse: "He remains a suspect in each one of those shootings and that's part of the investigation."@

Bob Bezotte, Livingston County Sheriff: "The task force is still working the other 23 cases that we know of. There's always the chance of a copycat shooter out there so you have to be vigilant and aware of what's going on around you."

As for what lead them to Casteel, police say it was a tip but there's no word on that $102,000 reward.

McCain: "We're gonna have to vet through all that and come to a conclusion after the investigation is totally complete and we'll make a determination about the reward money."

For now they're focused on Casteel.

Is he guilty?

Could he face more than just state charges if he's found guilty of shooting on the interstate?

McCain: "The US attorney's office in the eastern district is reviewing it to determine if there's a venue for federal charges, that hasn't been determined yet."

And neither has Casteel's involvement in any of the 23 other shootings but police say they're expecting charges out of Oakland County very soon.

Casteel is currently in the Livingston County jail on a 2 million dollar bond.

He's expected back in court for a preliminary exam conference on November 14th.

All of these charges could add up to seven years.
