Shooting Suspect's MSU Roommate Remembers A Different Man

When Chris Burns thinks of his old roomate, Raulie Casteel, his recent arrest isn't what he remembers.

"Frankly, he was probably the last person I would have thought of who was capable of this. When I knew him, he wouldn't hurt a flea," remembers Burns.

Now, Casteel is facing charges connected to at least one of the highway shootings that have been plaguing drivers from three counties in the past few weeks

"I was thinking, 'what the hell is wrong with this psycho, shooting at people and terrorizing people?' I was avoiding the area driving down to Detroit."

The two have known each other since 1996 when they first lived together as grad students at MSU. Burns says the last time they saw each other was about six years ago, a casual get-together to catch up, and Burns says Casteel was the same guy he knew back in college. He says Casteel tried to get ahold of him two years ago, but he he lost his number and hadn't spoken to him since then.

Burns says he was shocked the morning he woke up and saw Casteel's mugshot in the headlines.

"I could not believe it. I had to read it three times to see if it was really the same guy that I knew. Then I got a phone call from somebody else and they confirmed that it was my old roommate."

Now that Casteel is in the court's hands, Burns says he just wishes the best for Casteel's family.
