The two have known each other since 1996 when they first lived together as grad students at MSU. Burns says the last time they saw each other was about six years ago, a casual get-together to catch up, and Burns says Casteel was the same guy he knew back in college. He says Casteel tried to get ahold of him two years ago, but he he lost his number and hadn't spoken to him since then.
Burns says he was shocked the morning he woke up and saw Casteel's mugshot in the headlines.
"I could not believe it. I had to read it three times to see if it was really the same guy that I knew. Then I got a phone call from somebody else and they confirmed that it was my old roommate."
Now that Casteel is in the court's hands, Burns says he just wishes the best for Casteel's family.
