Sparrow Offers to Buy Bingham Elementary

It's been empty since June but now there's a plan to bring an old school back to life.

When the Lansing School District closed Bingham Elementary at the end of the last school year, many worried the vacant property would stay that way for some time.

However, last week a major local employer put in an offer to buy it.

It wasn't even on the market but Sparrow Hospital has made an offer to buy Bingham Elementary.

Myra Ford, School Board President: "We thought it was a good offer."

Coming in at $550,000, Ford says the offer matches the assessed value of the vacant property.

Ford: "I think it's a good opportunity both for sparrow and for us."

As far was what Sparrow plans to do with it, it's not giving specifics, saying only that the site will likely house expanded clinical services and parking.

Whereas right now, the district is paying just to keep the building empty.

Ford: "Ya know, mowing the grass and keeping the heat on in the winter and things like that, ya know you have to maintain - you have to do certain maintenance things on a building."

That's why Ford says the board will likely accept the offer at a meeting later this week.

Ford: "I have not heard anyone who's indicated to me at least that they object."

As for the $550,000 they'll get from the sale? It'll go back into the general fund, helping to bridge next year's budget gap.
