Astronaut Speaks to Local Elementary School

Retired astronaut David Leestma spoke to the 4th and 5th graders of Laingsburg Elementary Tuesday during an assembly. It has been 20 years since he hopped aboard the space shuttle Atlantis and traveled more than 3 million miles into space.

"It was almost like a blessing really. The earth is really remarkable, beautiful planet to look down on and see," said Leestma. "Between the clouds and water and earth, it's an awesome site."

But Tuesday, his journey a little shorter, taking off from Texas to the library thanks to grants from the Laingsburg Educational Advancement Foundation. His mission: inspire, hopefully launching these kids into their dream careers.

"Study hard, put some effort into their science, technology, math, courses and maybe make them think that they could do something they haven't even thought about."

Big dreams because as they learned, not even the sky's the limit.
