Jackson Fire Dept. Hires 7 New Faces, 2 Old from Grant

A $2 million grant for the Jackson Fire Department allowed them to hire seven, full-time firefighters and re-hire two who had been laid off.

On the job since October, they're now all trained.

"It's a dream job. It's something I've always wanted to do since I was a little boy. I'm second generation, my dad was a firefighter. So, I got my opportunity and I'm doing it now," said Mike Stock, one of the new guys.

While Stock spent about 20 years with the Onondaga Fire Department, he says he couldn't ask for a better department to work for now.

The newbies also get the job of cooking all the meals for the guys, but that's in the little downtime the deparment has.

"It's a busy place. We average 10-15 calls a day per truck. It's what I wanted, was a fast-paced department. And now I've got it. I was up for 24 hours and maybe had one hour of sleep. That's how busy we were my first day," said Stock.

They're still not at full staff, but leaders say all the new firefighters will be a huge help for the department and the community.

"With more people, it's common sense. You can do it quicker. And you can do it more efficiently," said Steve Childs, assistant chief at the Jackson Fire Department.

The grant is set to expire in August 2014. At that time, the department would have to apply for another grant or try to get the city to find money in the budget.
