Man Takes Deputies on Wild Chase Through Jackson

A man trying to elude police took Jackson County sheriff's patrols on quite the drive Tuesday night.

The suspect, 39-year-old Derrick Lester, was flagged for speeding through a stop sign on Blackstone Street at Michigan Avenue in Jackson. He continued the pursuit onto Wilkins Street after running a red light at Washington. He then hit a pickup truck carrying a family, but continued the chase, hitting two parked cars and a telephone pole on Wilkins. The entire pursuit lasted around a minute.

When the deputy approached the pick-up truck, the passengers included the man, his wife and their two children, ages 8 and 9. They were assessed at the scene by Jackson City Fire personnel, but were not injured.

He's being lodged at the Jackson County Jail on charges of Fleeing and Eluding and Operating While Intoxicated.  It is also believed that the suspect in this incident was involved in multiple previous property damage crashes prior to being observed by Sheriff's deputies.

"It is a very dangerous situation as all police chases are. We try to evaluate those as to the nature of the chase and what is happening. And fortunately this chase was over nearly as soon as it began," said Undersheriff Christopher Kuhl.
