Ricky Wheeldon, Fled Trial in May, Faces Sentencing

A 53-year-old man who was captured in October after being wanted since he fled the last day of a criminal trial in May has been sentenced to at least 29 years behind bars and a maximum of 50 years.

Ricky Wheeldon was caught following a traffic stop in Ingham County's Leslie Township, about 70 miles west of Detroit.

Authorities say Wheeldon ran a theft and drug ring. He stood trial in May and a Jackson County jury convicted him of nine felonies, including running a criminal enterprise.

Wheeldon was sentenced Thursday in Jackson in that case. He called the proceedings a "kangaroo court" and wasn't going to prison without a fight, vocalizing his opinion of the "lack of justice" served.

A packed courtroom, even reality star Dog the Bounty Hunter, who was part of the team tracking him down, showed and chatted with Wheeldon before sentencing. An appeal is already in the works for the criminal charges that include racketeering and felony firearms.

He also is facing new charges in Jackson and Ingham counties related to fleeing the trial and his capture.
