Mild Weather Hurting Winter-Based Businesses

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Local businesses that depend on wintry conditions are being hit hard by this season's mild weather.

According to the National Climatic Data Center, Lansing gets an average of 4.5 inches of snow in November, and about 10.8 in December. However, this year hasn't met those expectations, and local businesses are suffering. "We rely pretty heavily on snow plowing. We're waiting for it to come around so we can have some extra money," says Ben Hidy of Hidy's Auto Repair, Towing and Snow Plowing Inc. "It's a really big part [of business], and these soft winters have really been hurting us."

Hidy says snow plowing and salting make up about 35 percent of his family's business. But without the right conditions, it leaved little work to be done. "Repair slows down in the winter and the snow plowing and the salt all help keep us going and keep everybody busy," says Hidy.

The company currently has 17 snow plowing trucks, three salters and 100 tons of salt for the roads, but as of yet, has not had much of an opportunity to use them.
