This quarter's report announces top antivirus vendors in North America and worldwide, and also includes statistics analyzing the usage of real time protection and frequency of virus definition updates by users.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) December 11, 2012
OPSWAT released their quarterly antivirus market share report today, including enhanced, detailed analysis of antivirus product usage. The report compares the most popular antivirus vendors and products in North America and worldwide, as well as Windows operating system usage in North America and worldwide.
OPSWAT, the leading provider of software management and security technologies, analyzed more than 150,000 opt-in reports from endpoints worldwide over the past year. The reports, generated by OPSWAT’s free AppRemover tool, utilize the detection capabilities of the OESIS Framework to give insights to the applications installed on the endpoint computer.
Highlights of this quarter’s antivirus report include Microsoft’s increased dominance of both the worldwide and North American markets and high percentage of users with active, up-to-date products. While AVAST maintained a narrow lead as the top worldwide antivirus vendor, Microsoft made a large gain over the past six months and has almost closed the gap. Among antivirus products worldwide, notable gains were also made by third-ranked worldwide product Avira Free Antivirus, as well as ESET Smart Security and Norton Internet Security.
New in this quarter’s report are sections showing market share results with only active antivirus products included. By using additional capabilities of the OESIS Framework, OPSWAT was able to determine if an antivirus product had real time protection (RTP) enabled and used this as an indicator to show market share of only active products.
“The expanded sections that we were able to include in this report add a new perspective on the market,” said Elisse Lockhart, Marketing Manager at OPSWAT. “By comparing only products that have real time protection enabled, we have a better idea of which products people are actually using, as opposed to those that are deactivated or have exhausted their free trial period.” In the results that include only products with RTP enabled, Microsoft came out ahead in every category, edging out AVAST as the top vendor worldwide. This sample also increased Avira’s standing, from fifth to third, when only activated antivirus products were considered.
OPSWAT’s report also shows data about the usage of specific antivirus applications, including percentages of users with real time protection enabled and average time since the last virus definition update. The highest rates of real time protection activation were found in Microsoft Security Essentials and McAfee VirusScan, with the lowest coming from Norton Internet Security. Microsoft Security Essentials also had the highest rate of users who had updated their virus definition updates within the last seven days, followed by avast! Free Antivirus and Avira Free Antivirus. “Looking at all users of antivirus applications, we found that just over 80% of users have real time protection enabled and about 70% have updated their virus definitions in the past week,” commented Derek Bass, Marketing Associate at OPSWAT. "This indicates that at least 30% of applications are not on the most secure settings."
