Layaway Angels Help Mid-Michigan Families

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) -- Last Christmas, when Robert Bellew, a Jackson man, couldn't get his kids the gifts they wanted, he says it was one of the worst feelings ever.

"It was rough last year. This year got a little bit better and I figured I could get a little bit more," said Bellew. Bellew fell on hard times again. "I ran out of money. Had to pay on layaway."

The single father put gifts for his two children and infant grandson on layaway, determined to give them presents, even if they had to open them after Christmas. "I said ok there's nothing I can do about it. We're just going to have to wait until later."

Until Bellew got a call from K-Mart's assistant manager Cherie Zakrzewski -a call that left him in disbelief.

"Okay yeah, my layaway is put back I know," assumed Bellew, "She says no, somebody came in and paid your layaway. I said huh?"

An anonymous donor paid for all Bellew's layaway items. Bellew wasn't exactly chosen at random.

The anonymous donor came into the K-Mart store wanting his money to go to someone whose layaway list included children's toys and children's clothes.

"I had a high chair, baby clothes for my grandson, clothes for my daughter," Bellew said.

Zakrzewski says this year has been exceptional in terms of layaway angels at K-Mart. "We've got about three thousand dollars worth of layaway payments that people have come in and paid off," she said.

Zakrzewski says unfortunately, however, that isn't enough to cover all layaway items. "There has been a few cases where the layaway has been returned to stock because it's been over the limit to pay on it."

As for Robert Bellew, he's got an anonymous angel, walking around out there somewhere.

"Oh I'd thank him so much. He made my Christmas for me, my kids and my grandson," Bellew said.
