Fire Destroys Home, Owner Still in Santa Suit

Posted:

A house fire displaced a family in Leoni Township on Christmas Eve, leaving the home owner still in his Santa suit.

Blackman-Leoni Township Public Safety Director Mike Jester told our media partners at MLive.com that the fire likely started Monday morning in the attic due to an electrical problem

"It's starting to really hit me now," said a teary-eyed Steve Burnett to MLive.

50-year-old Burnett and his girlfriend, Valerie Guy, saved his children's gifts, but nothing of their own. There were no fire extinguishers in the area, so water had to be trucked in for the one-story house. Officials believe the fire burned for a while before the family discovered it because it was above them.

A fire extinguisher was used, but wasn't able to keep the flames at bay.

According to MLive, the Red Cross has offered to help the family pay for a hotel for a few days.
