Christmas Day proved to be a devastating day for two mid-Michigan families, now homeless after flames tore through their homes.
The first one sparked shortly after noon in Mason on Rolfe Road in Vevay Township. Crews from several area fire departments worked together to put out the flames. The Mason Fire Chief says the family of two first noticed the fire when they heard crackling from behind the wall near the fireplace. Both made it out safely, but there is no word yet on the cause.
The second fire sparked around 3p.m. at a home on the 500 block of Union Street in Jackson. Seven people were inside when the fire started. They all made it out safely, but by the time firefighters arrived, the flames and smoke was coming from the first, second and third floors. Walls had to be removed from the home to keep the fire from spreading. The cause is under investigation.
The Red Cross was called into help for both families.
