Snow Plows Get Extra Wing Added for Better Coverage

The Jackson County Road Commission says they've added wing plows to some of their trucks. It's a type of plow that clears to the right shoulder. So it sticks out of the back right sida of the turck.

The new plows will be used heavily trafficked areas, specifically I-94 and southbound-127.

Officials say many drivers may not have seen this type of plow before and warn that when it's snowing hard, the plow can kick up a plume of snow. A person driving behind a snow truck won't be able to see the plow, so you should never pass them on the right.

The road commission says that wing plows will allow a truck to do double-duty, getting the snow in front of the vehicle and to the side in one go, so they save time and money.

"Instead of doing two rounds on a given road, we can do one round and that will cut our time down. So we're quite anxious to see them work and with snow coming we may have an opportunity to do that," said Ken Straub, the managing director.
