LANSING, Mich. -- (WLNS) The Lansing Police Department says the city had 13 violent deaths in 2012, up since last year.
According to LPD, it's a very rare situation that the deaths are random. Officer Robert Merrit says that in majority of cases, "they either know the suspect, have a previous relationship or some [are] drug related."
Arrests have been made seven of the cases, five of them are still open and one was ruled as self-defense. This year's number is up from previous. It was the first time in three years the number has seen double digits.
- 2012- 13 Homicides
- 2011- 8 Homicides
- 2010- 9 Homicides
- 2009- 9 Homicides
"The department is going to continue to move forward with the community as well as the business community and all the outreach programs we have meeting with the pastors, and schools and the resource officers. As well as the gun buyback we'll be having at the first of the year here. We think all these things will help reduce crime for 2013," said Officer Merritt.
