Getting Healthy in 2013 and Keeping the Weight Off

Every year, so many of us make a resolution to be healthier. We vow to eat better and work out more. But as the year goes on, sometimes we lose our focus.

Planet Fitness in Lansing says that this is the busiest time of the year, with more than 20 new people registered by noon on this new years day. They say they expect that number to continue to rise as the week continues.

"I've seen people join in December and then by March, they're done and they don't come in anymore and I'm thinking to myself, why?" said Fitness Instructor Connie Marsh.

Marsh says to keep that new years resolution, you must keep realistic goals in mind. Don't be afraid to start small.

"You want to do it gradually, that way it's easier for your body to keep the weight off long term," said Marsh. "Set yourself a weekly goal, whether it's making it to the gym a certain number of days that week or if you're on some cardio equipment setting a goal to reach a certain speed or a certain distance in a certain amount of time."

Then reward yourself in some way for reaching that goal.

It's of course not just about hitting the gym. You have to also eat better. Marsh says try not to think of it as dieting, instead think of it as a lifestyle change.
