Carol Wood Elected Council President

The Lansing City Council has selected its new leaders.

By a vote of 5-3, council members chose Carol Wood to serve as president and A'Lynne Robinson to serve as vice president.

The decision - which took all of 10 minutes - stood in stark contrast to the marathon session in 2012. That's when a divided council finally picked Brian Jeffries only after Kathie Dunbar dropped out.

The Lansing City Pulse reports that her dropping out was in exchange for Jeffries and councilman Derrick Quinney's votes for president the following year.

According to her biography on the city's website, Wood has served on the city council since she was first elected in 1999. She served as the council's vice president in 2002 and president in 2003.

She serves as an at-large member, which means she was elected by the whole city.

"We're going into a time in the city where we have a number of challenges and hope to work with fellow council members to make sure that we can move through these challenges and make a difference for the city of Lansing," said Wood.

Wood is often at odds with Mayor Virg Bernero. In fact, Wood ran for mayor and lost to Bernero in the last election.

Robinson, who represents Lansing's 3rd Ward, has also previously served as the council's president.
