Man Formally Charged With New Year's Homicide

Posted: Updated:

Prosecutors have formally charged a 20-year-old Lansing man with a New Year's Day homicide.

Delon Miller faces five charges including open murder, 3 assault with intent to commit murder, and one weapons charge.

That's after police and prosecutors say he shot and killed 29-year-old Nicholas Jones after a fight outside a party store on the near-north side of town. Four other people were injured.

Miller's attorney, Denise Hairston, says there's still a lot of evidence to be considered in this case. She says her client is innocent and says he was at the scene on New Years Eve, but says his actions were in self defense, trying to protect his friend and his own life.

"At this point I'm very hopeful with this case, I know there's going to be a long, dragged out investigation and I know all the evidence is not in. So hopefully when everything does come in, the charges will be dropped," said Hairston.
