Early Morning Police Shoot-out in Ionia County

A police shoot-out in Ionia County ends with one man dead.

It all started after State Police say a man opened fire in a parking lot of the Belding Police Department.

At about 5:10 this morning an on-duty Belding police officer heard something strange outside the station.

"Police contacted central dispatch, they heard several noises outside," said Lakeview Post Michigan State Police Lt. Brody Boucher.

Those noises turned out to be gunshots, fired in their own parking lot, according to Boucher.

The Belding officer walked into the parking lot only to find several patrol cars whose windows had been shot out, and a suspect leaving the area in a white van, according to Boucher.

"A pursuit ensued between the belding police and the suspect," Boucher said.

The Belding officer called for backup and soon he along with a state trooper were in pursuit of the suspect's van, until, police say, the suspect stopped at the corner of Hawley and M-44.

"The suspect exited the vehicle and shot at officers," Boucher said, "Officers returned fire and the suspect was killed."

Police say the outcome could have been much worse; neither the Belding officer nor the State trooper were hit or suffered any injury from the gunfire exchange.

State Police are not releasing any information about the suspect. The incident is still under investigation.
