Suspect Dead, Woman Safe After Campus Abduction

Posted:

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (WLNS) - Authorities say a man suspected of abducting and sexually assaulting a Central Michigan University student has been fatally shot after a chase by police miles away.

The woman was abducted from campus in her own vehicle Wednesday night and raped at a home a few miles away.

Police say 30-year-old Eric Lee Ramsey from Mount Pleasant put the victim and two gas cans in the car. While driving, the woman jumped out of the car and ran, while still tied up, to a nearby home where she got help from the homeowner. Ramsey then poured gas on the home and set it on fire.

The girl was able to call police while the homeowner put the fire out.

Ramsey fled the scene and later hit a Michigan State Police trooper vehicle in Gaylord. He then stole a sanitation truck, when he rammed another MSP trooper.

A short while later, a Crawford County Deputy located the sanitation truck and the suspect hit the deputy's car head on. He got out of the patrol car, ran up to the cab of the pickup and killed Ramsey, but not before he was able to post to his Facebook page, "Well folkes im about to get shot. Peace."

6 News also learned that Ramsey has an extensive record of violent behavior. In January 2005, he was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. In July 2007, another assault charge, along with resisting arrest and destruction of property. He was just released from prison in July 2012.

Central Michigan University is in Mount Pleasant, about 70 miles north of Lansing
