Frozen Water Pipes A Costly Mistake

Posted:

Are you hearing some strange noise from your water pipes? Is the pressure low? If you answered yes, your pipes could be frozen or potentially become frozen.

Kennan DeWitt knew something was wrong as soon as he turned on his faucet.

"The first sign was loss of pressure in the hot water pipes and then there was some noise that it was straining," DeWitt said.

That's because his water pipes were frozen.

"This house there was a frozen bathroom faucet and frozen shower," said Roto-Rooter technician Roger Jarvis.

Roger Jarvis with Roto-Rooter says that because DeWitt didn't have insulation around the pipes, something Keenan says he didn't think he needed because his pipes were in a crawl space.

"I didn't know that you had to insulate outside like the windows, that you had to insulate the pipes and that you had to maintain a temperature in the crawl space">

It's a mistake that will cost him hundreds of dollars to fix, but could be up to thousands if you wait to long to solve the problem.

If you head down to your local hardware story you will find a variety of ways to help with pipes insulation; there is the inexpensive styrofoam that will wrap around your pipes or there is the electric cable route, it's more expensive, but will prevent your pipes from freezing.

It's too late for DeWitt who is putting insulation on after his water pipes thaw, but he has this advice.

"Be proactive, have it looked at when the weather is not extreme so you don't have problems when it is extreme."

Problems that could have a big effect on your home and wallet.
