Tips on How to Winterize Your Vehicle

Posted:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - It's easy to blame your car trouble on the cold weather, but there are several things you can check to make sure you don't get stranded on cold mornings.

General Manager at Brogan's Tires, Rich Mangold, says a common problem is battery problems--a part of your vehicle that can cost, on average $105. He says the first step is to know where the battery is and have it tested before fall.

"Three to four years is about how long the battery  will last. One of the problems is the corrosive buildup. You can maintain that yourself by keeping it clean," said Mangold.

He says another problem to watch out for all the different levels in your vehicle.

"The other thing you can check in the winter time to make sure your vehicle is proper is to make sure you have the correct amount of oil and the correct viscosity and the correct type in there," said Mangold. "Keep an eye on your anti-freeze. It has a cool level when it's cold and hot where it needs to be filled up. Check it with a tester or bring it in and we'll test if for you so it drops down to a certain temperature where it should be in the winter. Also, keep a close eye on your tires. A lot of these aluminum tires will leak in the winter time so you'll want to get them cleaned up and bead sealed so they don't leak and you have proper air pressure on the road."
