A fire broke out around 11:30 this morning, in the basement of the Lansing's Board of Water and Light's dye water plant.
Lansing's Fire Department responded and was able to put the fire out within an hour.
Director of Communications for Lansing's BWL, Steve Serkaian says nobody was hurt, and the building only suffered mild smoke damage.
"We're especially grateful that there were no injuries and that the water plant continued operating without any interruption of services to our water customers," said Serkaian.
Serkaian says the fire started after a contractor, hired to fix a crack in a cement wall, brought his equipment into a confined space in the dye water plant's basement, and his equipment caught fire.
"Anytime you have an incident in a confined space involving equipment that use a variety of materials the fire department brings a number of their crews out to investigate if there was any damage, no [hazardous material]ssues at all," said Serkaian.
Cedar street was shut down for a short period of time on Michigan avenue, but was re-opened to traffic around 1:00 p.m.
