LANSING, Mich (WLNS) – On the eve of Lansing's State of the City address, Mayor Virg Bernero spoke with 6 News about what he plans to cover. The mayor says themes include the Lansing economy, business growth and gun violence.
Bernero says 2013 has already gotten off to a good start, especially with the Cadillac ATS being honored with the North American Car of the Year Award. "I went to Washington and I fought like heck to save General Motors," he says. "We never lost faith in our GM workers. Now look how GM is delivering for Lansing.
Bernero says over the last four years, Lansing has added more than 4,000 manufacturing jobs, and that there are more to come when production of the Chevrolet Camaro moves from Canada to Lansing.
But challenges for Lansing do persist. "The principal challenge in Lansing continues to be the budget," says Bernero. "We've upgraded our projections. We were calling for an $11 million deficit for next year. Now we've reduced it to $9 million. So it's headed in the right direction, but it's still going to be a heavy lift."
As will reducing gun violence in Lansing, he says.
"We need to look at our gun safety laws. We need to make sure we're not putting guns into the hands of criminals. We need to make sure the background checks are solid," he says. "I've attended one too many funerals. I've stood at the bedside of one too many gun victims in this community. It's outrageous and something has to be done. I think we have an opportunity now to do something real."
This will be Mayor Bernero's 8th State of the City address. This year, the speech will take place at the BWL Cogeneration plant in REO Town at 7 p.m. on Monday.
