LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - One person is dead after an early morning accident that shut down part of a major highway. The 24-year-old Lansing man who died was inside the vehicle that caught fire.

Police say three other people suffered minor injuries in an accident or series of accidents that involved a total of six cars.

It happened around around 8 a.m. along east-bound Interstate 496. The east-bound lanes of the highway will be shut down between Aurelius and Pennsylvania while police investigate.

The accident and resulting car fire caused massive backups that stretched all the way to where U.S. 127 merges into 496.

The crash is still under investigation.
