McLaren Hospital Announces No Longer Hiring Smokers

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - McLaren Hospitals announced Friday they will no longer hire anyone who smokes.

The policy will be enacted starting February 1st. The company will screen for nicotine in the pre-employment process, along with a drug test already given before employment. Anyone who tests positive won't be eligible for a job.

Employees who smoke that are currently employed will not be effected.

Floyd Chasse, vice president of human resources, said, "Our mission as a health care provider is to save lives and promote healthy lifestyle. So it was kind of a no brainer for us because it links so closely with our mission."

McLaren joins several other health care systems around Michigan, including Sparrow, and the nation who have the same policy.
