Teen Girl Dead In Clinton County After Brother Discharges Shotgun

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – A 13-year-old girl is dead after being shot by her 14-year-old brother Saturday evening in what police are calling an accidental shooting.

This happened shortly after 4 p.m. in Ovid Township, which is part of Clinton County.

Officials say the brother was handling a shotgun in their home when the firearm discharged, striking and killing the young girl.

"We always tell parents to make sure those firearms are locked up, they're unloaded, and if you can at all secure them in a safe or someplace where young people can't (get to) or touch those guns," says Clinton County Sheriff Wayne Kangas.

Right now, officials say they've released the brother back to the parents since the shooting appears to be accidental. However, the investigation is ongoing.

"It's just a tragedy," says Sheriff Kangas. "I just can't imagine trying to deal with it as a parent."
