Teen Girl Accidentally Killed By Shotgun Identified

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - The 13-year-old girl who police say was shot and killed by her 14-year-old brother has been identified as Paige McGinnis.

It happened shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday in Ovid Township, which is part of Clinton County.

Officials say the brother was handling a shotgun when it fired, hitting Paige in the head and killing her.

Grief counselors were placed in Ovid Elsie Middle School and EE Knight Elementary School in Elsie on Monday.

"Paige is just a delight. Just a beautiful young girl. You know, a student of the month, you know just an outgoing kid, very respectful, as is the brother. I mean, just a great family all around. A military family who has given so much to our country," said Superintendent Ryan Cunningham, who has known the family for years. "It's devastating because she is truly one of those delightful kids to have in your school."

The Michigan National Guard confirms Daniel and Misty McGinnis, the children's parents, both served overseas in Afghanistan  and remain active with the guard.

The investigation remains open until an autopsy is finished.
