Testimony Continues for Father Accused of Killing Infant Daughter

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - A Lansing judge heard a third day of testimony in the case against a man accused of killing his infant daughter. Prosecutors say 3-month-old Ja'Nayjah Sanders died last month from several head injuries.

Her father, John Sanders, 37, is charged with open murder and first degree child abuse.

Tuesday, the baby's mother, Shamarrie Kittle, took the stand and testified that Sanders wasn't happy that she wanted to take a break from the relationship and that was causing tension between them. She said on the day Ja'Nayjah died, she left the baby in Sanders' care while she went to run an errand. While she was out, she got a text from Sanders with devastating news.

"He said, 'She stopped breathing.' I said 'What do you mean she stopped breathing?' He said 'she stopped breathing while I was over there making her a bottle' and that they were over there at the hospital. And I said 'what hospital.' and he said Ingham, and I said, 'okay, I'm on my way," recalls Kittle.

The preliminary exam will continue on February 21st.
