LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Downtown Lansing may be on the fast track to becoming the next Michigan Main Street Community. It's a designation that could help bring in more business, jobs, entertainment and development to downtown for years to come.

Downtown Lansing Inc. brought together local leaders, community members and business owners, all who live, work and play in downtown, to show off why the area means so much to them.

"Downtown Lansing is growing, it's booming... It's really the face of the city," said Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero.

That face was on display, with a big smile of course, for the Michigan Main Street Center. The capital city's downtown area is competing for "Main Street" status and this group raced through a fun presentation and performance to get it done.

"It'll help us to attract convention business, it'll be put on the CVB, the website. It's one more reason why conventions, people will choose Lansing. The good housekeeping seal of approval," said Mayor Bernero.

So far, 16 communities statewide have been given that approval, with the Michigan Main Street Center helping each of them grow and succeed based on a four-point plan: economic restructuring, promotion, organization and design.

Downtown Lansing organizers say if our city can now join that list, it'll make people #LoveLansing even more.

"We're in it together. We sink or swim as a region and really downtown Lansing is the regional downtown. There's only one state capital," said Mayor Bernero.

Downtown Lansing will find out if it's the newest "main street community" next week, joining Howell, Owosso and Old Town as other mid-michigan locales on the list.
