LANSING, Mich (WLNS) -- The Lansing Mobile Food Bank, which serves local residents on the third Saturday of each month, is struggling to provide food for the growing number of families in need.
More than 500 families showed up on Saturday at the South Church of the Nazarene for the 9-11 a.m. food giveaway. Some staked their spot in line before sunrise to guarantee they'd walk away with food.
Joan Jackson Johnson, director of human resources and community service for the City of Lansing, says for the last few months, more and more families have been showing up at the mobile food pantry. She adds that the last three months, the pantry ran out of food. Saturday, close to 30 families who waited for food walked away with nothing, she said. However, organizers say they are working to get food to those families who weren't able to get groceries on Saturday.
Jackson Johnson says there's a great need for the community to pitch in, and anyone interested in making donations should contact the Greater Lansing Food Bank or reach out to her directly at 517-483-4477.
