ePIFany Event has Mid-Michigan Residents Performing Random Acts of Kindness

The idea for hosting an event, exclusively for performing random acts of kindness, came to former WLNS Anchor Bob Hoffman, in a fit of road rage.

"I just had this epiphany that when you are nice to somebody else, you get niceness in return," Hoffman said.

Hoffman created ePIFany Now parties (PIF being an acronym meaning Pay It Forward), which have grown into events that now attracting hundreds of volunteers to do just that -pay it forward.

"Now we're having these large events where we're celebrating kindness," Hoffman said.

The concept of the event is for each volunteer to go out into the community and perform one act of random kindness for a stranger. Volunteers carry "Pay it Forward" cards with them to pass along to the recipient of their kindness, in hopes that he or she, in turn, will do something kind for another stranger.

Acts of kindness ranged from something as simple as dressing up like a whoopie cushion to make people smile, to donating money and toys to children in Sparrow Hospital's Pediatrics wing.

"Back in 2008 my son was diagnosed with a brain tumor," said Nancy Nowak, who delivered a toy basket to the Intensive Care Unit at Sparrow.

"I just wanted to give back and it was a good time to do that, whether you know them or not it just feels good and hopefully brings a smile to their face," Nowak said.

Volunteers shared their experiences with one another.

"There is so much positive that's happening," said Hoffman, "If we don't talk about it then who does?"

It was Hoffman's hope that volunteers like Nowak have just as good an experience as the people they help.
