Michigan Rarely Inspects Barber Shops, Hair Salons

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - An audit found that Michigan barber shops and hair salons are rarely inspected by state regulators.
There are approximately 14,000 shops in the state, mostly salons, but the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs visited just a tiny percentage. The audit covered a period of nearly three years, through last June.
State officials say they don't have enough employees to inspect the businesses. They say they have only 10 agents who investigate consumer complaints for 32 occupations.
The state says inspecting barber shops and salons at least once a year would require adding the equivalent of 18 full-time staff.
