3-Year-Old Boy Killed in Accidental Shooting

The 3-year-old son of a Jackson County Sheriff's Deputy accidentally shot and killed himself Saturday night.

According to Jackson County Sheriff Steve Rand, it happened around 5pm at the deputy's home on the 7000 block of Jackson Rd. in Liberty Twp.

According to the sheriff, the deputy was on his way to work when it happened. Rand believes the child was at home with his mother at the time.

The mother of the young boy called his father immediately. He was rushed to Allegiance Hospital, where police say he died.

"I'm obviously upset. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family." Rand told 6 News.

Michigan State Police are investigating the incident. The name of the deputy or his child have not been released.

Sheriff Rand says he plans to bring grief counselors in to talk to members of his staff.
