Apple Growers To Vote on Self Taxing

Apple Growers in Michigan can start voting Monday on whether to continue to tax themselves to promote their crop.

More than 800 growers will get ballots from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Under this program growers pay a fee based on weight and whether the apples are grown for the fresh market, processing, or juice.

The money is then used to develop new markets and for education and apple research.

The program was last approved in 2008 and must be renewed every five years.
