WASHINGTON, March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, a consortium of Mexican tomato growers and the U.S. Department of Commerce signed a new agreement that will govern the import of fresh Mexican-grown tomatoes into the U.S. This new accord extends a suspension agreement that has, since 1996, provided the strong and workable framework by which the Mexican growers exported their tomatoes to the U.S. market.
Speaking on behalf of the Mexican growers, Martin Ley of Del Campo Supreme, had this to say about the new agreement:
"After nearly nine months of sometimes difficult conversation and negotiation with the U.S. Department of Commerce, Mexican growers will be able to continue to focus on their highest priority: producing high-flavor, naturally vine-ripened tomatoes that over the last two decades have won the favor and allegiance of growing numbers of American consumers. Our high-flavor tomatoes have earned a larger and larger share of the overall U.S. market because of their superior quality and wide variety.
